Legislative Roundtable

T

he CCMS held a legislative roundtable discussion
on Friday evening May 17th at the Chester
County Hospital in West Chester, PA. Five elected
officials participated in the dinner meeting, including US
Congresswoman Chrissy Houlihan, PA State Senators Andy
Dinniman and Katie Muth and PA State Representatives
Carolyn Comitta and John Lawrence. Over two dozen local
physicians from a wide variety of specialties and practice
modalities attended and exchanged ideas and insights with their
federal and state representatives.
After a very cordial reception, the meeting was called to order
by Mian A. Jan, MD, President of the Chester County Medical
Society. Dr. Jan and Senator Dinniman led a discussion about
the recent closure of the LifeCare Hospital in West Chester,
noting that the long-term acute care facility had been acclaimed
for excellent care provided to patients. It was further noted that
other similar facilities are very rare, and that many patients will
be forced into other long term care facilities that do not provide
the same levels of care.
The group discussed in some detail the proposed changes
to the venue rules which are currently under consideration by
the Rules Committee of the PA Supreme Court. It was noted
that since the Senate passed a resolution in February the court
has agreed to not make any changes in rules until after it can
consider the recommendations of a Senate Committee. It was
further noted that the Chester County Medical Society has
become an active partner in the PA Civil Justice Coalition,
