The Art of Chester County

A Rare Gem

Over the years we have at Chester County Medical Society
encouraged local art and artists. This time we have broadened
our horizons and are introducing an artist from a remote part
of the world, who despite living in a part of the world where
even basic education for girls is an achievement and to achieve
the skills in a field of art needs to be appreciated and admired.
Daania Aftab comes from the wilderness of northwest
frontier of Pakistan which is now called Khyber
Pakhtoonkhwa, which is also Taliban country who frown upon
women's education. She is currently based in Islamabad, the
capital of Pakistan.
I always knew Daania dwelled in art and held her
bachelor's degree in design, but recently I saw her work and
was stunned by the vibrancy of her color schemes and the
details of her work not just in Plein Air art but also in wildlife
art. Details of her work especially as it relates to nature and

wildlife is mind boggling because she has not even seen some
of these places and animals.
Edgar Degas said, "Painting is easy when you don't know
but very difficult when you do." I think Daania's work may
look simplistic but the time and effort put into it can only be
understood by one who knows art. Van Gogh's words, "The
greatest artist is a simplifier."
I started my article with the quote from Picasso "Every
child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist when
we grow up." Survival in life has a way of taking over and
talent instead of blooming is inhibited and even lost, and how
many would-be great artists don't reach their potential?
We must encourage these artists regardless of where they
come from because art bridges societies, cultures, religions and
brings people together in this divided world.
