Scammer

ave you ever received a call from a complete stranger,
or, even worse, by a robot? You probably would
say "Yes." Most Americans may not know their
rights, which include not being called or harassed
by callers who want to improve their bottom line by
decreasing yours.
There are "cold calls" where you have no previous
contact with the organization or the individual. They
often are seeking your opinions for some political party
or trying to get your money for purported charitable
organizations. Some so-called charitable agencies are
dishonest. Before donating to any reported charity, you
should check with www.charities.pa.gov to see if they are
registered. The Pennsylvania Department of State has 13,
6823 charities and 489 professional fundraisers registered.
You can also go to 501c3lookup.org/Pennsylvania if you
are interested in how much money raised actually goes
to the cause for which funds are being raised.
Medicare and Social Security never call you without
your having called either agency first. This was particularly
a problem when Medicare removed the social security
number on the Medicare card. Many scammers tried to
get social security numbers and birthdates for purposes
of identity thievery.
My mother, who was quite debilitated by severe
osteoarthritis and osteoporosis, got a wheelchair that
required a lift and was not suitable for easy maneuverability in their old farmhouse. She felt that it was
no cost to her and so she wanted the appliance. Here
the durable medical equipment (DME) company and
my mother both acted inappropriately. The company
