Medical Knowledge to
Include Physical Fitness

T

here is truth to the adage that exercise is medicine, but how much knowledge
of exercise is there in medicine? In the physiological sense, exercise results
in the release of neurotransmitters, such as serotonin and norepinephrine,
leading to enhanced communication between neurons and a general euphoric
response. Additionally, the repetitive movements of exercise cause alterations of DNA
transcription and protein synthesis, which result in an improved ability to take in and
store information. The act of exercising itself improves cardiovascular function and has
been shown to enhance memory and improve mood. This is the scientific, intellectual
perspective. But how do we, as living organisms, experience these scientific processes?
Beyond the physiology, exercise is a celebration of what an entire body can do. Shifting
our perspective slightly, we can see our bodies are meant to move. From this perspective,
