Restaurant Review

TATIANA'S RESTAURANT

I

By ROBERT ETTLINGER, MD

'm not sure where I heard about this recently, but I'm pretty sure I
saw something about Ukraine in the news. Something about phone
calls or political campaigns, whatever. Anyway, this got me intrigued
when I heard about Tatiana's Restaurant in Mechanicsburg, the only
Ukrainian eatery in the area after moving from Palmyra a few years ago.
Bordering the Black Sea, the cuisine of Ukraine incorporates elements
of both the Slavic nations with those of the Eastern Mediterranean. A
breadbasket for that area of the world, the earthy ingredients of their
food is often boiled or fried, followed by stewing or roasting to finish
its taste character.
Our party started with a few tasty appetizers. Ukrainian Meatballs
were done with white champagne, Alfredo sauce and Gorgonzola
cheese, while Maryland Blue Crab & Mushrooms were dressed
with a creamy Asiago sauce. Dinners come with a warm soup; that
night, it was the national dish of Ukraine, a clear borscht with
cabbage and beets. Brown bread with olives was warm and crunchy.

rice and broccoli. Ukrainian Seafood Stew loads a saffron seafood
broth with sea bass, mussels, clams and shrimp. Other choices
for a future visit include Sea Bass (this evening, it was available
with a coconut or a pecan crusting), Ukrainian Stroganoff, lamb
or pork Osso Buco, and a Butternut Squash Ravioli with Shrimp.
Presentation was uniformly wonderful with fresh herbs and lots
of color, and the staff was friendly and attentive.
A Mediterranean salad with eggplant, feta and Kalamata olives,
and a Caesar salad with kale and organic quinoa, are available as
entrees or sides.
The restaurant is BYOB (my thanks to Tatiana for the usual
reasons.) The dessert tray included Baklava, a Ukrainian mascarpone
mousse cake with a honey apricot topping, and a sweet pecan
cobbler. The coffee was tinged with fragrant Middle Eastern spices.

So, let's make a deal on a quid pro quo. Spend an evening at
