SYMPOSIUM ON THE HEALTH
IMPACTS OF UNCONVENTIONAL
NATURAL GAS DEVELOPMENT

Considering
the Current
and Future
Health of
Pennsylvanians

By AUTUMN VOGEL

n October 2016, the Pennsylvania
Medical Society House of Delegates
resolved to "support a moratorium
on new natural gas extraction using
high volume hydraulic fracturing in
Pennsylvania" [fracking] and urged "the state
legislature to fund an independent health
registry and commission research studies
on the health effects of fracking." It was
with this in mind that the students of the
Student Physicians for Social Responsibility
of Penn State Hershey College of Medicine
resolved to organize a public event detailing
the current research on the health impacts
of natural gas development. On April 26th
at Penn State College of Medicine, 130
participants, including medical students,

College of Medicine, class of 2020

physicians, community stakeholders, environmental organizers, and representatives
from the natural gas industry and government
agencies attended the Academic Symposium
on the Health Impacts of the Fracking
Industry. The event was sponsored by Penn
State College of Medicine's Humanities and
Public Health Sciences Departments and
endorsed by the Dauphin County Medical
Society, Physicians for Social Responsibility
Chapters from Harrisburg, Philadelphia and
New York City, the Southwest Pennsylvania
Environmental Health Project, and Protect
Pennsylvania: Healthcare Professionals for
a Liveable Future. This student-organized
symposium featured the research of three
leading scientists in the area of the health

implications of natural gas development in
Pennsylvania and beyond.
Dr. Brian Schwartz, of Johns Hopkins
Bloomberg School of Public Health, presented his work in a presentation entitled:
"Studies of Unconventional Natural Gas
Development and Health in Pennsylvania
by the Geisinger Environmental Health
Institute." In his work looking at asthma
exacerbations among over 400,000 patients of
the Geisinger System, Dr. Schwartz showed
that there is a strong connection between
unconventional natural gas well activity near
a patient's home the day before the patient
