early every day, most physicians have to deal with incidents of drugs
causing side effects, either deduced by themselves, or complained about
by patients. Annually, an estimated 4.5 million office or emergency
room visits are primarily related to adverse effects of medications, and 2
million hospitalized patients have side effects termed significant. When we pick up
medication from the pharmacy, we are often given a paper listing oft-times horrible
possible adverse effects, and see commercials on TV from law firms that make us
wonder...is my doctor trying to kill me or something?
Let's take a look at how side effects are determined, why
thEy happen, and how we can deal with thEm, including
avoidance and management.
When pharmaceutical companies develop new drugs to treat disease, in conjunction with medical researchers, the Food and Drug Administration mandates
that they undergo a trio of testing phases to assess their efficacy and safety. In the
