A Serious Public Health,
Economic and Social Issue

T

hirty-year-old Jose is suffering from excruciating
pain, but nobody believes him except his wife.
Following his recent car accident, he reports
pain in his neck and head at an intensity of 9
on a scale of 1 to 10. He complains of severe pain
and feels groggy; the only thing he wants is to have
his pain under control. However, all imaging studies
including X-ray, CT, and MRI of neck and brain turn
out normal. He states that the doctors have given
up on him, as they are unable to find the reason for
his pain. Perhaps, as one doctor suggests, it's all in
his mind.
