Practice Management

That's why, almost 50 years ago, hospitals in the United States
began screening newborns for rare, life-threatening disorders. Even
babies who look and act perfectly healthy could have a potentially
life-threatening disorder. The chances are very slim, of course, but
they exist. Metabolic disorders, blood disorders, and heart disorders
often don't exhibit symptoms until days or months after birth.
Newborn screening is a form of preventive health care in which
babies are tested within the first days of their life to discover evidence
of diseases for which the principal symptoms may not yet be apparent.
Newborn screening in Pennsylvania is completed to ensure every
newborn is tested for metabolic, endocrine, hemoglobin, heart disease
and hearing loss. The majority of these diseases are genetic and the
testing performed identifies babies with certain disorders which,
without intervention, may permanently impact newborns and their
families. Early recognition and treatment of most of these disorders
leads to a better outcome for the newborn.
The Newborn screening covers the following disorders:

 Hearing Loss (Hearing screen)

The Newborn Screening Program's goal is to eliminate or reduce
mortality, morbidity and disabilities by screening and treatment
of the disorders included in the Pennsylvania Newborn Screening
Panel so as to help affected babies live as long and normal of a
life as possible.
An important component of Newborn Screening tests is Newborn Metabolic screening (Neogen screening) in which a "heel
stick" is done - the baby's heel is pricked, and drops of blood
are smeared onto a card. These blood samples are taken shortly
after birth, usually within 24-48 hours.
The Newborn Metabolic Screening program has been constantly
evolving since it began 50 years ago. Over the years, more diseases
have been added to the newborn screening tests, but there are still
many that aren't routinely screened. The screening requirements
