A

s a kid, I grew up in the New York
City suburbs, close enough to be
able to see the Empire State Building
on the horizon from my backyard.
Because we had relatives in Manhattan,
Brooklyn and the bordering towns of Newark,
my family was accustomed to driving into
"the city," with its different vibe than the
trees, grass and more widespread homes
where we lived.  As such, we were used to
the restaurants, stores, parks and cultural
activities daily experienced by our relatives
in their urban neighborhoods.
In Harrisburg, I've come across many people who feel less comfortable in the center city,
preferring the peripheral suburban and rural
areas.  If this might be you, you're missing
out on a wonderful dining experience in
the heart of downtown.  1700 Degrees, off
the lobby of the Hilton at Market Square,
is arguably the finest dining in the area, and
a great place to celebrate.
Culinary direction is led by Executive Chef
John Reis, well respected as the long-time
leader of local Hilton dining projects, and with lamb ragout and smoked mushrooms.
Executive Sous Chef Tony Bianco.  The warm My Cobio Crudo had a bite to it, with chili,
décor features large windows overlooking fingerlime and ginger adorning a little wall of
Market Square.  Its sophistication is accented the marinated, firm Caribbean fish, squash
by high glass wine bottle walls and photog- and enoki mushrooms.

and Angus selections in all sizes and cuts.
Recently named as one of the "Great A dinner mate thought that it was the best
Bourbon Bars in America," 1700 has one steak he ever tasted.  Tonight is not the time

Our party of four made it our mission
to save room for dessert.  We did have to
wave the white flag to the full desserts like
Maple Crème Brulee, Pumpkin Mousseline
and Chocolate Pecan Tart, as well as an
ever-changing choice of gelatos to cool
things down, and opted instead for smaller
bites including macaroons, truffles and red
velvet brownies.
If all of this hasn't enticed you to come
downtown, would free valet parking do the
trick?  Get away soon to an incredible dining
experience in 1700 Degrees Steakhouse, for
a special occasion or a little splurge that
you deserve.
