Immunization, or vaccination, helps to prevent serious and
sometimes deadly diseases. Immunizations are not just for children.
Adults too need to get vaccinated periodically to stay protected
against serious illnesses like the flu, measles, and pneumonia. Each
year, thousands of adults in the United States suffer serious health
problems, are hospitalized, or even die from diseases that could be
easily prevented by vaccines, including influenza, whooping cough,
certain bacterial infections, hepatitis A and B, shingles, and even
some cancers.
Immunizations are one of the most valuable contributions to the
overall human health and safety in modern times. Immunizations
prevent people from getting serious illnesses or complications from
those illnesses that just under a century ago may have meant certain
death or long-term morbidity. Vaccines prevent many diseases that
can result in prolonged disabilities and significant financial toll
because of lost time at work, medical bills or long-term disability care.
National Immunization Awareness Month Campaign is backed by
National Public Health Information Coalition (NPHIC) and CDC
to focus on important vaccine messages for all age groups. Weekly
themes during this awareness month include advocacy of immunization for babies and young children, pregnant women, adults, and
preteens/teens. During this month, we can all use this campaign to

promote awareness about vaccines and develop strategies to increase
immunization rates within our community.

HERE ARE SOME IDEAS TO HELP PROMOTE
AWARENESS REGARDING IMMUNIZATION:
* Remind family, friends, and coworkers to stay up to
date on their shots.
* Discuss with your family members and friends about
importance of vaccines. People of all ages can get
vaccines to protect them from serious diseases.
* Invite a doctor or nurse to speak to parents about
importance of vaccination for kids.
* Encourage everyone in your community, especially
those in high-risk groups such as pregnant women
and the elderly, to get vaccinated to prevent the flu.
