Quartz. There's a reason why quartz countertops are popular,
and it's their durability. Quartz is heat and impact resistant
and resists stains and scratches. Plus, it comes in a variety of
colors and patterns.

*

*

Wood. When properly sealed, wood countertops are top-shelf
surfaces for food preparation. Wood is budget-friendly, and
it's heat-resistant, so you don't have to worry about marking
it with hot pans. Wood countertops often are combined with
other surfaces to provide a variety of work areas.

*

Laminate. The most budget-friendly countertops, laminate
is enjoying a popularity surge due to patterns that makes it
look like natural stone or quartz. Laminate comes in nearly
all colors and fits in with many decors.

These are only a sampling of materials used for countertops, and
we've focused mainly on kitchens. Countertops also are important
to functionality and decorating in bathrooms, laundry rooms and
other areas of your home. Do some research or find a reputable
dealer who can help you in order to make the best choices for
your countertops.

*

Stainless Steel. One of the easiest materials to clean, stainless
steel also resists bacteria buildup. It provides a modern, stylish
look and is easily maintained.

*

Marble. Marble countertops are beloved, with a price that's
comparable to some granites. Because marble is porous, cleaning
can be a bit more difficult, as the material is prone to staining.

*

Concrete. Concrete has been gaining in popularity as a material
for countertops. It mixes well with other materials, such as tile
or glass, to give you a unique look, and it's energy efficient, as it
captures heat and releases it back when the room cools down.

Tile. Inexpensive and easy to maintain, you can mix and match
tile to create your own design and style. Many homeowners
have used tile and installed their own kitchen countertops,
so if you're handy, you might want to consider that option.

The Backsplash
A backsplash is an important, but often overlooked, part of your
kitchen or bathroom. Whether you're choosing a backsplash as
part of a complete redo or just want to update a space, there are
some things to keep in mind before you pull out your credit card.
Your backsplash is an important accessory, but it should enhance,
not dominate, your décor. A classic style or understated color will
complement the rest of your room, but not draw the eye away
from other, more visible elements like cabinets and countertops.
Too much of a good thing isn't always a good thing. If your backsplash shouts, it will detract from the rest of your kitchen. And,
keep in mind that at some point, you may be passing your kitchen
or bathroom along to a new owner who is likely to appreciate a
more neutral tone.
