he last day of November, I was finishing morning
barn work when I noticed a tiny lamb in the pasture.
The lamb was so small, but it was healthy and bawling
for its Mom. Periodically the ewe would stop grazing and
talk back, but she made no effort to "mother" her baby. She
nonchalantly followed the lamb as I pulled it along on the
ground, carefully backing toward the gate. This was a very
time consuming process to get her finally to the paddock and
into the shed barn. Compare this attitude with my other ewes
who almost push me aside when I pick up and walk away with
their lambs.
I still had the challenge of catching this wild strong ewe
and tying her so I could milk her. She was huge and so
uncooperative but she had plenty of milk. Her baby learned
the fulfillment of a bottle very quickly and looked forward
to my visits. About two days later I glimpsed the little one
catching its own supper under the tightly confined Mom.
Thank goodness that ended the milking and the bottle. That
will also end Mom's career at Tarrymor as soon as the lamb
is weaned.

My scheduled lambing was set to begin in mid March. I had
gotten an uneasy feeling back in August when the ram was
turned in with the ewes to produce March offsprings. His chest
was smeared with a bright magenta paste, which should then
be revealed on the butts of accepting ewes. He had eighteen
lady friends and only a handful got marked. I had dismissed
this as my stinginess of the paste application on
the ram.
My lambing season had officially arrived three and half
months early. Over the next four weeks the lambs kept
coming. The weather was cooperative and the pasture grass
still sustained the flock. They walked into the barn, looked
at the hay and went back out to the pasture. By subtracting
gestation from the birth date, I determined that the little first
lamb was conceived on the fourth of July. That was the exact
day our whole family flew to Germany to celebrate vacation
and meet our youngest grandchild. In order to simplify
the farm chores, I left the ram in the pasture with the ewes,
banking on the now debunked adage that sheep do not breed
in the heat of Summer. The sheep were left to their own
