o where were you if you were at all? Where was I?
Well, it was my first year on the faculty of the college
where I taught for the next thirty-eight years. And
on April 24th, I joined 185,000 others at the Capitol. Yes,
the subject was the war in Vietnam. It was a peaceful
protest until Attorney General John Mitchell and the
Justice Department ordered the police to intervene,
which created havoc, but not violence, vandalism,
assaults, or injuries.
Then there was the 1971 Bangladesh genocide
resulting in the Bangladesh Liberation War. No, I was
not there, but I was at Madison Square Garden for the
concert, produced, directed, and made by Beatle George
Harrison, and featuring Ravi Shankar, Bob Dylan, Ringo
Starr and Billy Preston, among others.
Jerry Blavat, the Geeter with the Heater, opened
his legendary Memories in Margate, New Jersey. Dr.
Alfred I. Avins, with $3,000.00 in his pocket, formed the
Delaware Law School, which opened the doors to the
Wilmington YWCA during the week of October 4th.
In film: The French Connection; Carnal Knowledge;
Dirty Harry; Little Big Man.

defeated the Ohio State Buckeyes 27-17 in the Rose Bowl.
This was a major upset as the Cardinals were 8-3 in the
regular season and the Buckeyes had been undefeated
for three seasons. In the Super Bowl, the Baltimore [sic]
Colts won over the Dallas Cowboys 16-13 on a field goal
with five seconds left on the clock.

And now, SCOTUS. Nineteen seventy-one saw a lot of
action in the Supreme Court of the United States.
In New York Times Co. v. United States, 403 U.S. 713
(1971) the latter sought to enjoin the Times and the
Washington Post from publishing the contents of a
classified study entitled " History of the United States'
Decision-Making Process on Vietnam Policy. " The
Court delivered a per curiam opinion denying the
injunction, citing Near v. Minnesota, 283 U.S. 697
(1931). Justices Black and Douglas concurred. Justice
Brennan concurred, as well as Justices Stewart, White
and Marshall. Chief Justice Burger and Justice Blackmun
dissented.
In Bivens vs. Six Unknown Federal Narcotics Agents,
403 U.S. 388 (1971), the Court held that a cause of
action was stated pursuant to 43 U.S.C. ยง1983 where
federal agents made a warrantless search of petitioner's
apartment without probable cause. Per Justice Brennan,
joined by Justices Douglas, Stewart, White, Marshall and
Harlan. Chief Justice Burger, joined by Justices Black and
Blackmun, dissented.
McKeiver v. Pennsylvania, 403 U.S. 528 (1971) held that
there is no constitutional right to a jury trial in juvenile
proceedings. Justice Blackmun announced the judgment
of the Court for the plurality. Justice Brennan concurred
in part and dissented in part. Justice Harlan concurred
in the judgment. Justices Douglas, Black and Marshall
