appearance and size after a Philadelphia Eagles fan gave him a
jersey that increased his strength, and his vision grew to match
his heart. Hoping to help others, he became an overseer of the
Eagles community. Swoop is best known for his stunts during
the Philadelphia Eagles Football Games such as zip lining across
Lincoln Financial Field and parachuting into the stadium.
On February 10, 2015,
Franklin the "fuzzy blue"
Dog was introduced as the
new, Philadelphia 76ers mascot
to 400 fans and media at The
Franklin Institute. The name
"Franklin" is a reference
to Philadelphia's Benjamin
Franklin, and the fact that
Franklin is a fuzzy blue dog
does not have anything to
do with anything. The 76ers
figured the mascot would be
for kids, so they asked a ton of
local kids who the mascot should be. Turns out, kids really love
fuzzy blue dogs. Franklin was first introduced at the Wells Fargo
Center on February 19, 2015. In his first year as the new mascot
he had more than 100 appearances around the Delaware Valley
area entertaining fans of all ages with his fantastic dance moves,
his dunking skills on the trampoline and his cuddly and warm kid
friendly, entertaining and amusing comedic antics.
September 10, 2018. The
Philadelphia Union unveiled
its first mascot in franchise
history, as it "hatched" during
an introductory ceremony at
the Philadelphia Zoo. Phang,
a big blue snake with a gold
mohawk, hatched to the team's
goal song, much to the delight
of the crowd that gathered
for the unveiling. Phang is a
tribute to the Union's crest. It
depicts a rattlesnake in homage
to the political cartoon ("Join
or Die") attributed to Benjamin
Franklin.

September 24, 2018. Gritty,
the 7-foot, furry orange
creature, was introduced
as the official team mascot
for the NHL's Philadelphia
Flyers. Gritty has since
captured hearts and minds
with his scruffy appearance, googly eyes and bizarre demeanor.
The name "Gritty" itself is an inside joke used as a descriptor
by fans for any player who is not the most athletically talented,
but still inspires overwrought metaphors. His mascot back-story
paints him as a subterranean entity that emerged from the bowels
of the Wells Fargo Center during construction like the Phantom
of the Opera, where he feasts on hot dogs.
November, 2018.
"Wingston" of the
Philadelphia Wings, the
city's National Lacrosse
League expansion team
owned by Comcast
Spectacor, was recently
introduced during a special
event at Friends Select
School in Center City
in front of an audience
of 300 students; he will
make his first game debut
on December 15, 2018 at
Wells Fargo. Wingston's
nearly 7-foot frame is
covered in soft golden
fur with a feathery tuft of
fire-engine-red lax flow
on the top of his head that swoops from side to side while he
makes diving plays at the net. He boasts golden wings on either
side of his delightfully oversized head. Dotted with three large
jewels, his tail is his defining feature. The presence of the red,
black and silver jewels is in homage to the Wings rich history,
representing the three reincarnations of the team, dating back to
1974. Dressed in his signature black, charcoal and red Wings
jersey, game shorts and sneakers, Wingston is always ready for
a catch or to take shots on net. He represents Philadelphia well,
sporting no. "215" on the back of his jersey. His unique ability
to spin his head 360 degrees around gives him an advantage over
the competition, allowing him to see the game from every angle.
Wingston will be active in the Philadelphia community where he
will help grow the sport of lacrosse and engage fans of all ages. *
