Cross-Country Journey." The underlying joke was that,
somehow, Forest Gump was responsible for the creation of
these cultural memes, as well as for instigating the "running
craze" of the 1970s, when there was a boom in competitive
road running and in jogging for recreation and fitness. In
the United States, it is estimated that 25 million Americans
took up some aspect of running in the 1970s and 1980s.
Many running events, shoe and apparel manufacturers grew
and formed to accommodate the demand. The boom also
occurred in other countries.

And, just like that ... he put his running
shoes on and gave the people hope!
Forrest Gump, the 1994 blockbuster, starring Tom
Hanks. Can you believe it has been 20 years since Forrest
Gump sat on that bench and told us that "life is like a box
of chocolates"? Yes, on July 6, 1994, Forrest Gump entered
theaters-and our hearts. The film was critically acclaimed,
winning the Academy Award for Best Picture that year, along
with 13 other Oscar nominations.
Reporters/News Media: Why are you running? Are
you doing this for world peace? Are you doing this
for women's rights? Or for the environment? Or for
animals? Or for nuclear arms?
