October 13, 2019. The Third Annual Delaware
County Veterans Memorial Association (DCVMA)
Flying of Veteran Casket Flags with the Delaware
County Bar Association (DCBA) included
legendary names from the legal community,
and friends thereof, who shaped Delaware County
following their heroic efforts in their military
service.
The event was arranged by the Military and Veterans Service
Affairs Committee of the Delaware County Bar Association,
in conjunction with The Delaware County Veterans Memorial
Association (DCVMA).
Ceremony conducted by: DelCo Veterans Alliance and
the DCVMA Board of Directors. Welcoming remarks by
Police Chief Joe Day, US Marine & DCVMA President, with
the ceremony conducted by members of the Marple Newtown
Combined Veterans Alliance.
Sound/Music: DJ and sound engineer, John "Hugo" Useller;
vocals by Theresa Flanagan Murtagh, Esq.
Special Mention: Captain Ralph W. Galati, United States Air
Force
The distinguished careers of those recognized were
recounted by special guest PA State Representative Chris
Quinn and representatives of the Delaware County Bar
Association, Richard A. Mitchell, Esquire, United States
Army Military Police Corp, and Daniel C. Van Wyk, Esquire,
retired Brigadier General from Air National Guard, Global
War on Terrorism, Desert Storm.
Those recognized represent the embodiment of what they lived
and breathed every day of their lives. They stood up for country
in their service as veterans and continued their dedication
to the notion of service in the field of law. To them and to all
the veterans who have served our country, we will be forever
grateful.

Veteran flags were accepted by family members
& colleagues of:
Oliver C. Armitage, Friend of the DCBA: United States
Navy, WWII
Nicholas D. Vadino, Jr., Esquire: U.S. Army from 1960 1966, intelligence analyst for the 34th Intelligence Detachment.
Active duty from 1960 - 1961 and 1961 - 1962 during the Berlin
Crisis.
His spirit lives on ... The Nicholas D. Vadino, Jr.,
Memorial Award is presented annually at the Delaware County
Bench Bar Conference to a member of the Bar Association for
significant contributions by a young lawyer to the organized bar.
Hon. William Toal: United States Army, Germany, First
Lieutenant, 97th Signal Battalion.
Hon. James Gorbey: United States Marine Corps, WWII
Garland D. Cherry: United States Air Force, radio operator
and tech instructor for the 525th Air Base Squadron
On behalf of the Delaware County Bar Association and the
Military and Veterans Service Committee of the Association,
thanks be to all for your presence and participation in our 2019
ceremony. Thank you for your unwavering support of all
military personnel and their families for their past and present
service to our great country.
The Veterans and Military Service Affairs Committee of
the Delaware County Bar Association includes: Richard A.

Purpose: The Veterans and Military Service Committee of
the Delaware County Bar Association was formed as a vehicle
through which our members who have served our country may
be recognized, both those who have passed, and those who
are still with us. Additionally, it is the further purpose of this
committee to honor all of those who have served our country.
"Salute" DCBA Member, Edmund Jones, 101, of
Swarthmore, a lawyer, bank founder, and elected public official,
who passed away Sept. 14, 2019. Mr. Jones was drafted into the
Army in December 1942 and sent to France in January 1945 as
a captain in a heavy automotive maintenance company. Later
that year, he was transferred to the Judge Advocate General's
Office in Frankfurt, Germany. He assisted with the Nuremberg
War Crimes Trials by taking depositions from witnesses to war
crimes. He was honorably discharged in June 1946. *
