Cheers to 75 Years...
The Media Fellowship House!
September, 2019. The Media Fellowship House celebrated 75 years of
its social justice non-profit work in Delaware County at the Springfield
Country Club. The celebration featured speaker Bill Whitaker, CBS's 60
Minutes journalist and reporter who grew up in Media, PA, with his sister,
DCBA member, Gail M. Whitaker, Esquire.
The remarkable support for this event helped the Media Fellowship
House continue the work of building a community free of injustice. In
this past year they have helped 155 low-to-moderate income families
start building a path to homeownership, and look to further their work
in addressing the issue of economic injustice in Delaware County. The
Media Fellowship House continues to offer programs that celebrate
differences and find common ground, such as Film Speaks, Book Club,
Study Circles, Youth Coalition, and the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Celebration.
Mr. Whitaker's appearance at the event was particularly significant
because in 1943 his mother, Marie, and a local Quaker, Dorothy Biddle
James, were the powerful forces behind the creation of the Media
Fellowship House after Marie was refused service at a local restaurant
due to the color of her skin. As the Media Fellowship House continues
the work these women started, there is much more to be done. The
Dorothy James Education Scholarship honors founders by providing
support for future leaders and deserving students in Delaware County.
The Media Fellowship House Mission: To provide programs that
promote social justice, diversity, and economic empowerment.
