Hear Ye, Hear Ye,

Delaware County
is 225 Years Old!
History is a vital part of the fabric
of Delaware County ... Embrace It!

The Chester Courthouse is a historic courthouse in Chester,
Pennsylvania, the former county seat for Chester County,
Pennsylvania, one of the three counties in the Province of
Pennsylvania laid out by William Penn. It was built in 1724 and
is the oldest courthouse still standing in the United States.
"West of Chester" was not a convenient location for people
living in the eastern regions, particularly near the thriving mills
along the Delaware River. In fact, records indicate that having
the county seat in West Chester became "aggravating to the
people of Chester (city) beyond endurance."

"In the year of our Lord, One Thousand, Seven Hundred and
Eighty-Nine," Delaware County split from Chester County,
"relieving its residents of the great inconvenience" of having to
travel to West Chester.
Thus, was created a relatively small county, land-wise, but a
great county that has grown and thrived for over two centuries.
The original Courthouse for the entire region was the
Chester Courthouse, built in 1724 and located in the City
of Chester. As more people settled further west, the leaders
wanted the seat of county government and the courts to be
closer. So, everything was moved out to Turks Head, which
later became West Chester because it was "west of Chester."

Quite a fight developed between the eastern and western
segments of the original county. In fact, armed forces from
Chester actually marched out to West Chester for battle. That
first conflict between the "removalists" and the "Chesterites"
almost culminated in armed confrontation, but was ultimately
settled "by a well-placed keg of whiskey."
Finally, on Sept. 26, 1789, the original county was split into
Chester and Delaware counties, being directed to be divided
by "a line nearly straight as may be, so as not to split or divide
plantations."
Delaware County consists of 184 square miles, divided
into 49 municipalities, and is the oldest settled section of
Pennsylvania. Even though it has the third smallest land mass,
Delaware County is the fourth most populous in the state.
Building on our rich history, Delaware County continues to
thrive in economic development, education, culture, commerce
and quality of life. *
