PROCLAMATIONS
in 19063
By the Mayor of MEDIA

MEDIA BOROUGH COUNCIL, JUNE, 2019.
Elected Officials: MAYOR, Robert A. McMahon
COUNCIL PRESIDENT, Brian C. Hall, Esquire
COUNCIL VICE PRESIDENT, Amy Johnson
MEMBERS Paul Robinson, Kevin Boyer, Sayre Dixon,
Lisa Johnson, and Peter Williamson
* To the Media Fire Company ... Borough Council had the
honor of recognizing Deputy Chief Christopher Zuccarelli and
Lieutenant Matthew Hatton of the Media Fire Hook and Ladder
#1 - Station 23 for their great courage by placing their lives
at risk to save the life of a trapped fire victim during a fire at
the Colonial Terrace Apartments, South Orange Street, Media,
on Friday, May 31st. A Shout Out to all of the mutual aid fire
companies who assisted at the scene!
* June ... LGBTQ Pride Month. The first of its kind in Media,
the Pride Event on Sunday, June 30th ... A family friendly
event on Plum Street Mall, with a reading of the Borough
Council Proclamation of June as Pride Month in Media
Borough by Mayor Bob McMahon, to recognize the LGBTQ+
Community. The reading was followed by the National Anthem
sung by Roger Ricker, songs from Camp Media Theatre kids,
performances, speakers, live music, and special pride discounts at
participating local shops and restaurants.
* The First Saturday in June ... National Gun Violence
Awareness Day. Hundreds gathered at the Second Baptist
Church of Media to start the "Wear Orange Rally and Walk to
End Gun Violence" sponsored by Delaware County United for
Sensible Gun Policy. Why Orange? Event organizers noted
that the color orange is worn by hunters in the woods so that they
can be seen and to protect themselves from harm, something

those in attendance said they want for themselves - to be seen
and to be protected from the threat of gun violence.

A representative of the group CeaseFire PA spoke of how gun
violence appears in different forms: homicide, suicide, domestic
violence, intimate partner violence and accidental discharge. In
Pennsylvania, gun violence is linked to more deaths than those
caused by vehicle accidents.
Now under consideration in Harrisburg, there is legislation to
enact Extreme Risk Protection Orders (ERPOs)-often known as
"red flag laws"-which empower families and law enforcement
to prevent gun tragedies by temporarily restricting access to
guns for individuals at an elevated risk of harming themselves or
others. In November 2016, Washington voters overwhelmingly
approved Extreme Risk Protection Orders through ballot
Initiative 1491.
Interest in Extreme Risk Protection Orders has increased
dramatically; today, at least 13 states have some form of extreme
risk law and dozens more have introduced legislation. ERPOs
are modeled on our well-established systems of Domestic
Violence and Sexual Assault Protection Orders with careful
considerations for due process and standards for evidence. *
