40 YEARS RUNNING...

MEDIA
5 MILE RACE

By Paul P. Padien, Esquire

O

n Friday, June 21st
runners of all ages
and abilities took
over State Street and the treelined streets of the Borough
of Media for the 40th annual
running of the Media 5 Mile
Race.

Fastest Lawyer Heather
Hayes is pictured with

Ceremonies and Race cofounder.

Esquire.

The race is a standout
favorite in the local running
community and a highlight of the Media summer season. The
2019 edition saw a record 1,829 entrants, throngs of fans and
revelers lining the course and perfect weather for racers and
spectators alike. The race, which included 6 runners who
competed in the inaugural race in 1980, was described by the
Master of Ceremonies and Race co-founder Frank Daly, as the
"best ever."

Earning bragging rights in the Delaware County Bar
Association Fastest Lawyer category were Gregory Mallon, Jr.
and Heather Hayes. Once again, the Fastest Female Lawyer race
was a close battle, with Hayes, Lindsay Roman, Jennifer DiPillo
and Jennifer Galante all finishing within seconds of each other.

Twenty-three-year-old Media resident Mathew Kazanjian was
the overall winner with a time of 26:09, a 5 minute 14 second
per mile pace over the hilly and challenging course. "I made my
move on the second lap as we were passing the Courthouse, and
took control of the race on the hill at 6th and Monroe," Kazanjian
had to say of his win.

The race is a registered Pennsylvania non-profit and a 501(c)
(3). Proceeds of the race benefit many Media area organizations
including The Domestic Abuse Project of Delaware County, The
Media-Upper Providence Free Library, Media Food Bank and the
Media Fellowship House. More information and donations may
be made at any time by visiting the Media 5 Mile Race webpage.

Thirty-one-year-old Siobhan O'Connor of Philadelphia and
a Ritual Running Club member who recently qualified for the
2020 US Olympic Marathon Trials, won the Women's Division
with a winning time of 29:25. O'Connor went out fast to beat out
a distinguished women's field from near and far which included
18-year-old Grace Forbes (2nd Place), the 2019 PIAA State
Champion in the 800 Meters for Strath Haven High School,
and Katarina Smiljanec, of Zagreb, Croatia, and a Virginia Tech
standout, who placed third.

The race is made possible through the loyal support of the
Borough of Media, Media businesses, the Media Business
Authority and residents alike who support the race with logistical
support, sponsorships and a very dedicated group of volunteers.
