A WOMAN'S CRUSADE:
ALICE PAUL AND THE BATTLE
FOR THE BALLOT
By Hon. Stephanie H. Klein (Ret.)

WOMEN IN THE LAW COMMITTEE'S
WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH CLE -
SAVE THE DATE MARCH 16, 2018:

I

n our Second Annual Women's History
Month celebration, the Women in
the Law Committee will host Mary
Walton, former Philadelphia Inquirer
reporter, who will speak about her book
A Woman's Crusade: Alice Paul and
the Battle for the Ballot, a wonderfully
written account of Alice Paul, prominent
suffragette and key figure in the battle
to achieve women's right to vote. The
program will take place on Friday, March
16, 2018, from 12:00 Noon to 1:30 p.m.,
with registration at 11:45 a.m. Lunch
will be included in the cost of $25 for 1.0
substantive CLE for Delaware County Bar
Association members. Ms. Walton's book
will be available for sale and book signing
after the program.
Why Alice Paul at this time? In the
midst of the dizzying and shocking
revelations about sexual harassment
in the workplace, Ms. Paul's brilliant

political campaign to
achieve passage of the
19th Amendment to the
U.S. Constitution offers
us inspiration and a model
worth emulating. She convinced a well-todo female elite to abandon their husbands
and families in exchange for hardship,
discrimination and scorn to achieve the
quixotic goal of women's suffrage. In the
course of seven short years, from 1913
to 1920, after decades of languishing
with little action in the U.S. Congress,
Ms. Paul's gutsy tactics blending shock
and awe and civil disobedience ground
in Quaker values gained the ultimate
success: women's right to vote. First
ridiculed, manhandled, imprisoned, forcefed and spat upon, these suffragettes
gradually gained grudging admiration
and then support to achieve passage
of the 19th Amendment in the U.S.

Congress on August 18, 1920, and then
ratification a little more than a year later, a
seemingly impossible task with most state
legislatures not due to be in session.
Delaware County has strong links
with Ms. Paul and the women's suffrage
movement. Her grandfather helped found
Swarthmore College and she received her
undergraduate degree there. Anna Howard
Shaw, President of the National American
Woman Suffrage Association, built a
house in Moylan, Delaware County, and
lived there from 1908 until her death
in 1919, before ratification of the 19th
Amendment.
We hope that you will be able to join
us for this thought-provoking program. *
