Common Pleas Judge Nathaniel C. Nichols.

T

he Honorable Nathaniel C.
Nichols has been serving as
the primary judge for both
Juvenile Dependency Court and Juvenile
Delinquency Court in the Delaware
County Court of Common Pleas since
his election in 2011. Prior to that, he was
associate dean of students and a professor
at Widener University School of Law, an
attorney in private practice, and managing
attorney at Delaware County Legal
Assistance Association.
Judge Nichols has been committed
to serving the community throughout his
legal career. He has served as President
of the Board of Directors of the Chester
Education Foundation and the Board
of Directors of the Delaware County
Housing Coalition. From 1995 to 2010,
he served on the 7th Congressional
District West Point Selection Committee.
Judge Nichols was past president and
board member of the Domestic Abuse
Project, the Palmer House, Delaware
County Legal Assistance and the Chester
Education Foundation. He served on the
Delaware County Historical Society, the
Delaware County Housing Coalition and

the Delaware County Bar Association
boards of directors. He is a member of the
American, Pennsylvania and Delaware
County Bar associations.
Most recently, in April, 2018, The
Pennsylvania Bar Association (PBA)
Children's Rights Committee named
Judge Nichols as the recipient of the 22nd
Annual Child Advocate of the Year Award.
Judge Nichols' award nominations noted
the attentiveness, respect and dignity
he has shown to children, families and
stakeholders involved in dependency
hearings, as well as the many independent
visits he has made to placement facilities
and child welfare providers across the
state to gain better understanding.
For his exemplary efforts in the past,
Judge Nichols received both the Rose
Tree Media School District Service
Award and the Delaware County Bar
Association President's Recognition
Award for Outstanding Service in 2010;
The Pennsylvania Bar Association's Pro
Bono Award in 2008; the Chester NAACP
Judge Robert A. Wright Freedom Award
in 2005; the Widener Law
School Alumni Association
Professor of the Year Award
in 2003; the Delaware
County Bar Association
Elizabeth C. Price Award
in 2001; and the Domestic
Abuse Project Victims'
Rights Award in 1990.

Judge Nichols is the author of several
law review articles on legal issues of
importance to consumers. He has been
a contributing author to the Delaware
County Elder Law Handbook Resource
Guide and the Pennsylvania Bar Institute
Annual Bankruptcy Forum.
Nathaniel C. Nichols graduated from
Howard University where he majored in
Political Science and minored in Business
Administration. He graduated from the
Columbia University School of Law with
a Juris Doctorate degree.
Judge Nichols, a resident of the
Borough of Media, is a dedicated family
man to his wife Cheryl and their two sons,
Kenneth and Steven. They are members
of Saint Daniel's United Methodist
Church in Chester, PA.
