you want speech." Can you see the one second commercial?
Imagery is everything.
So how can we be really smart? What are smart goals... you
now, specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, and time-bound.
Mark Murphy, author and founder of Leadership IQ, suggests
your smart goals-may not be so smart. Murphy and Leadership
IQ studied 4000 employees or more and how they set goals.
Only 15% of them thought the goals they set this year would
"help them achieve great things."
Murphy suggests the following questions be the goals for
each individual and team...
Question #1: What skills do I want to learn?
Question #2: What is something I have improved on since
last month?
Question #3: How can I share my skills?
But you want to know what definitely works.... How
are you? A study of 1,000 working Americans suggests that
employees feel a greater sense of belonging when they hear 3
words: "How are you?"
Mummers know this. You know the question I get most, far
more than any other question, from the thousands of Mummers I
know. "Steve, how are you?"
We began a few minutes ago by saying the obvious: "You
look great!" You still do; maybe even a little better. We also said
"drop by drop a river is made."
Albert Rios is a poet and in 1952 he wrote ... One river gives
its journey to the next.
Later today, tomorrow and the weeks and years to come, your

journey will continue. More rivers to join. You will listen to
more people, speak with more people and if you are really smart,
ask them how they are and, you'll give.
Rios also wrote about giving:
Giving is, first and every time, hand to hand,
mine to yours, yours to mine.
You gave me what you did not have, and I gave you
what I had to give-together, we made something greater
from the difference.
I interviewed former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright
a few years ago. We talked about her book, Prague Winter. In
it she writes, "...the goal we seek, and the good we hope for,
comes not as some final reward but as the hidden companion to
our quest. It is not what we find, but the reason we cannot stop
looking and striving, that tells us why we are here."
So, together, let's enjoy the companion, the journey, the river.
Set better goals, not necessarily the conventional smart ones.
Keep questioning authority, but find the truth in the other.
Let's keep learning, thinking not about polarized
confrontation, but rather strategic problem solving over time. It
will require bringing people together by welcoming, not by force
or defeat.
Share more. Give.
Enjoy all of our ethnic, religious and community celebrations.
Encourage the sharing of them. Enjoy the Mummers on New
Year's Day.

Let us strive ...and strut.
