Memories Light
the Corners of My Mind
Misty water-colored memories of the way we were; scattered pictures of the
smiles we left behind; smiles we gave to one another for the way we were.

Pulsar would come out of a spaceship and dance with the
crowd at Pulsations every night. The spaceship was 27 feet in
diameter, pulled about 600 amps and had 70 lighting systems
on it. It would fly over the crowd on an I-beam track and came
down over the dance floor. The doors would open, dry ice fog
would dump out, bright lights would come on sort of like that
scene in Close Encounters, and this $400,000 robot would appear
to levitate out of the ship onto the floor. It was quite remarkable.

Everyone has a Pulsations story, I know I have a few! It was
THE spot in the Delaware Valley in the '80s, and in December,
2018, "The Goldbergs" recreated the legendary nightclub for
Barry's bachelor party. The club's famous robot even made an
appearance!
Back in 1983, Bar Rescue host Jon Taffer helped start
Pulsations Nightclub located in Delaware County until it closed
in 1995 ... it was "the greatest nightclub in the world" partially
due to a $400,000 dancing robot named Pulsar.
Pulsations was the brainchild of Leon Altemose, a non-union
builder in Philadelphia (a union town), and an anti-establishment
guy that aspired to build the greatest nightclub in the world.
Pulsations featured a robot, custom-built by International
Robotronics in New York named Pulsar, skinned to be an alien.
Pulsar became so popular a clone and was built for Rocky IV,
as Paulie's unique birthday present.

36 | Winter 2019

At 15,000 square feet,
Pulsations itself featured
10 levels, 11 bars, and 12
VIP hotel rooms. Prior
to having been built into
a nightclub, the building
that housed Pulsations was
formerly home to the Long
Horn Ranch. If you were
lucky enough as a kid to
celebrate your birthday
there, like me, you were
on top of the world! Only
a few miles away from
Media in Glen Mills on
Route 1, in the 70's it
seemed like the gateway
to the Wild West. The
restaurant was "Texas"
size huge with a life sized plastic bull at the entrance. Heck,
they even wore cowboy hats, carried six-shooter cap guns, and
brought to your table a cake adorned with sparklers; it was the
best ever and one of my all time family favorites! The building
was demolished in 1997; coincidentally, the year my twin sons
were born...my, how things have changed! *
