Law Day 2019
Save the Date!

A

ll members of the Bench, Bar, legal community and
public are cordially invited to attend the Delaware
County Bar Association's 2019 Law Day ceremonies
on Friday, May 3, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. in the Honorable John V.
Diggins Ceremonial Courtroom, Delaware County Courthouse.
Several months of activities sponsored and led by Bar
Association Members culminate on Law Day, including a Law
Day Program held in area high schools and at Delaware County
Community College. Law Day events include a Courthouse
Program for area elementary schools. The Young Lawyers'
Section holds a Mock Trial Competition, which concludes just
before Law Day, and there are essay and art contests for area
elementary, middle, and high school students.
President Dwight Eisenhower established the first Law Day
in 1958 to mark the nation's commitment to the rule of law. A
theme is chosen each year to provide an opportunity to spotlight
a particular aspect of the rule of law or legal process and how it
affects our daily lives.
The 2019 Law Day theme-Free Speech, Free Press, Free
Society-focuses on these cornerstones of representative
government and calls on us to understand and protect these
rights to ensure, as the U.S. Constitution proposes, "the
blessings of liberty for ourselves and our posterity."

Free Speech, Free Press, Free Society
In the United States and around the world, freedom of speech
and the press are among the most important foundations for a
free society. Free speech and free press are prominent topics
in public discourse and litigation. It is impossible to imagine a
free society without these individual liberties, yet historical and
current debates surrounding them continually challenge us to
consider their boundaries and resilience. Changes in technology
have reshaped how free speech and free press work in the
everyday world.
As "We the People" celebrate the blessings of liberty for
ourselves and our posterity, we honor select recipients to
receive the following awards at the ceremony ...
* The Themis Award to one who has performed outstanding
services in an area which has engendered great respect for the
law, stimulated the concept of individual responsibility, and
encouraged recognition of the responsibilities of citizens.
* The Liberty Bell Award of the Young Lawyers' Section of
the Delaware County Bar Association to one for outstanding
community service and activities that promote the spirit of
our Constitution.
* The Elizabeth C. Price Award to one whose dedication,
integrity and loyalty to the Bar Association most closely
exemplify that of the late Elizabeth C. Price, Executive
Director, 1974 to 2010.
DO NOT MISS the Law Day activities following the morning
ceremony, join us at The Historic 1724 Courthouse, Chester,
Pennsylvania at 2:00 p.m. We invite and encourage all members
to attend. Admission is free. All are welcome! *
