UNITED WAY OF BERKS COUNTY
Day of Caring
resounding success
Social distancing and wearing masks did not stop 140 Berks
Countians from participating in United Way's annual Day of Caring.
Earlier this year, United Way was unsure if Day of Caring would
be possible. Would nonprofits have projects? Would people want
to volunteer? The answer to both questions was a resounding yes.
Volunteers were needed more than ever and there was a desire of
many to volunteer.
COVID-19 definitely made 2020 Day of Caring different from
previous years. The majority of projects took place outdoors. Volunteers
rolled up their sleeves and flexed their muscles to tackle 20 projects
involving gardening, painting, cleaning and sprucing. For the first
time, Day of Caring also featured virtual projects.
Employees from UGI Energy Services never miss a Day of Caring
and they knew their support was incredibly important this year;
they teamed up with Glenside Elementary School to tackle much
needed gardening.

Michele Becker was one of nearly 40 employees representing
Met-Ed, A FirstEnergy Company. The group lent their muscle to
clean-up efforts at Aulenbach Cemetery in Mt. Penn.
"We mowed and painted, as well as trimmed and planted trees. I
participated because United Way helps so many people and families,
and I wanted to be a part of that. It made my heart happy," Becker said.
"The desire to help others remains strong," said Tammy White,
President, United Way of Berks County. "The caring nature of Berks
County is a shining example of our humanity during this pandemic."
"The school has a neighborhood group who normally helps to
maintain the garden, but COVID-19 made it difficult for them to
