Downtown Reading
Momentum is Building
in Downtown Reading

I
t is hard to believe that we are headed into the last quarter
of 2020. Through much uncertainty due to the pandemic,
Downtown Reading has continued to gain momentum.
A short timeline:
July:
* The long-vacant 15 N. 6th St.
was sold by a GRCA Member and
real estate broker Sean Moretti of
Destination Realty. The new ownership has plans to reposition the
building for new tenants. (GRCA is
excited for new courtyard neighbors!)
* BEYOND/HELLO medical
marijuana dispensary, located at
300 Cherry St., opened.
* 400 Washington St., known
locally as The Madison Building, was purchased with the intent to
redevelop the historic property into high-end luxury apartments.
This project is underway.
August:
* After many years of being closed, the sidewalk on the southeast
side of 5th and Penn Streets reopened.
* The City of Reading announced a request for proposals to develop
and implement a Downtown Plus Strategic Plan.
* Thanks to Berks Arts and several partners, over 30 pieces of public
art were installed and dedicated in Downtown Reading.
* R/C Reading Movies 11 & IMAX opened their doors again to
the public.
September:
* Alvernia University announced three new engineering programs
to be housed at their downtown campus at 401 Penn St.
* An agreement of sale for 345 Penn St. also known as the Reading
Eagle Building was announced with extensive redevelopment plans
in the works. Kudos to GRCA Member, NAI Keystone.

* Judy's on Cherry opened their doors again after many months
of being closed - they were missed!
* The Hair Come Up, located at 17 S. 5th St. opened their doors
for business.
October:
* The Reading Science Center, located at 645 Penn St., celebrated
its grand opening!
* Berks Arts Fast Lane Art program completed the installation of
more than 50 pieces of art in downtown Reading windows. GRCA,
located at 606 Court St., is excited to host several pieces of this art!
* La Casa De Los Pastelillos En Reading, located at 922 Penn St.,
celebrated their grand opening.
