Q: What are some effective ways to encourage
and engage employees to advocate on behalf
of their company?
A: Employees care about the success of their company. They
care about their success in terms of their job stability. They are
interested in the policies that affect the company. They really want
to know what the status of those policies is, either in Harrisburg
or in Washington, D.C. Many of them not only want to know the
status of those policies, but are very willing to advocate on what
the right policy position is with their elected officials. They are
more than happy to come to a town hall meeting in the workplace
with the legislator to voice their opinion. They are more than
happy to go to the district office of a legislator. They are more than
happy to go to Washington, D.C. or to Harrisburg to personally
advocate on a policy. Employers should be very active in engaging
and educating and informing their employees about these issues,
not just the senior leadership of a company but the employees
themselves about the issues. Employees care about these issues and
want to be advocates for them, if given the opportunity.

Q: What are some tips on keeping a discussion
focused on policy and not politics?
A: When you go into legislative offices there are no politics that
are being undertaken. It is all official business, and you are there
to talk about policy and how it impacts the company and how it
impacts the community. Whenever you talk to a legislator in his
or her district office, Harrisburg, or in Washington, D.C. it should
be focused on policy and the legislative process. How to try to
get that legislator to support the legislative policy that you would
like him or her to support. Rarely does politics ever get discussed.
There may be occasions where you might be in a workplace and
you are doing a townhall meeting with employees and someone
might ask you a question regarding Republicans or Democrats and
whose in charge of the process, who is in the majority, who's not
in the majority. Sometimes there may be a discussion about how
Republicans would be in the majority if they picked up 18 seats in
the house. Or if Democrats picked up four seats in the senate, they
would take the majority. Sometimes you have conversations about
that. Rarely do you ever get into quote unquote politics. You are
talking about policy, what it will take to move the right policy
forward or how many votes it might take in the house or the
senate. How to get a president's or governor's signature. Very rarely
do politics come up. People do not want to talk about politics in
the workplace. They want to talk policy and what is the best policy
and how to get legislators to understand that and to vote.
