Having had prior experience in a manufacturing facility, (Hitt)
Smith worked her way up at East Coast and was named president in
2014 after having served as general manager for 10 years.
The company currently is owned by Forino and John G. Smith,
who serves as chief financial officer. (Hitt) Smith and John Smith, to
whom she is recently married, handle the company's sales efforts, and
(Hitt) Smith oversees the day-to-day manufacturing operations.
(Hitt) Smith also travels extensively to meet with customers and
distributors.
"I'm a traditional Berks County girl," said (Hitt) Smith, who grew
up in Fleetwood and earned a business degree from Albright College.
"It's been a bit of shock to have to travel to places like South Africa and
Japan and Peru, but the opportunity for international business has
been wonderful."

Locally Grown Straw Used in the
Manufacture of Blankets
Erosion blankets prevent soil loss due to water or wind, and
eliminate sediment run-off into ponds or drainage channels. East
Coast manufacturers both degradable and permanent blankets, which
are sold to a variety of customers including owners of golf courses,
contractors, homeowners and others.
When placed on top of soil, the blankets can prevent soil from
washing away until grass has grown sufficiently to hold it in place.
"It acts as a protective blanket and a mulch," (Hitt) Smith said.

Degradable erosion blankets are made from straw and/or coconut
fiber, while blankets that remain in place permanently usually are
made from polypropylene, a thermoplastic polymer that has a wide
variety of uses.
