Rethinking the Grocery Industry

etail is changing. This might be the understatement of the
year, as we've heard countless times how Amazon, online
shopping, and the changing shopping preferences of
Millennials and Gen Z-ers are disrupting retail, from shopping malls
to corner stores. You can add grocery stores to the list of industries
rethinking their approach in the realm of new competition and new
consumer habits.
Yes, the "click or mortar" question has reached grocery shopping
as well, and in Berks County and beyond, competition is fierce.
Giants like Walmart hold significant market share nationwide, and
discounters like Aldi and Lidl have also entered the mix. Consumers
are demanding value, but they're also demanding convenience.
For Redner's Markets, Inc., staying ahead of trends has been
a company trademark. In 1970, Earl Redner and his wife, Mary,
bought two small supermarkets near Reading. The company grew
and Earl and Mary's sons, Richard and Gary, joined the business as
well. Redner's quickly expanded, but while they did so, a couple key
tenets emerged: a focus on employees and a focus on community.
As a family-owned business, these pillars were key to success, says
Ryan Redner, the current Redner's Markets President/CEO. "I
think the great thing about being family-owned is that we have
been immersed in the culture and good principals under which
to conduct business that our founder, Earl Redner, founded the
company upon," he explains. "Everyone in the family understands
the importance they serve within the company and the role we have
within our communities because our name is out there every day.
This has been passed down to each generation."
