Technology is complicated
... we are not.

Key also to the company's growth and
success from the 1970s on was its status
as independently owned, a key difference
in Berks between Redner's and other
competitors. "Being independent means we
can be flexible and nimble in our decisionmaking and not go through a myriad of red
tape to make things happen," notes Redner.
"We have made some significant changes
over the course of our company's history
and have always been able to pull things
off quickly and with efficiency. We are not
and our stores are not made nor managed

independent allows us this flexibility."

of its many "firsts" that was made possible in

or ESOP. Redner's was the first supermarket
in the state of Pennsylvania to be employeeowned. Ryan Redner explains, "The Chief
(Earl) was adamant that he would not treat
his employees the way his past employers
had, therefore giving them ownership and
sharing in the success of the company. Our
employee owners know they have a viable
stake in our company." After a year of
service and working more than 20 hours
per week, Redner's employees are given
company stocks.

Today Redner's has 43 grocery stores
and 21 Quick Shoppes throughout Eastern
Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Delaware. But
core values have remained the same, and
flexibility has remained key to success. From
the 1970s to today, the company has been
the "first" in a variety of categories among
PA supermarkets: the first supermarket in
Pennsylvania to have scanners, the first to
have a recycling program, and one of the

first to have in store pharmacies and salad
bars.
As the company innovated to meet
consumer demand, it also ramped up
community efforts. Many in Berks,
especially in the nonprofit community, are
familiar with Redner's 1% Save-A-Tape
program. For Redner's shoppers, qualified
grocery purchases are eligible for 1% of
