LEADERSHIP BERKS

n January, the Greater Reading Chamber Alliance (GRCA) and
Alvernia University announced the Leadership Berks program,
currently housed at Alvernia's O'Pake Institute for Ethics,
Leadership, and Public Service, would transition to the GRCA.
The Leadership Berks program will be co-branded under both the
GRCA and Alvernia University and, starting in the 2019-2020 class,
the program will be entirely housed at the GRCA.
Leadership Berks is the premier program dedicated to
developing, connecting, and retaining community leaders in Berks
County. Founded in 1985 by the United Way of Berks County, the
Greater Reading Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the United
Labor Council, and the Junior League of Reading, PA, Inc., the
program has been a fully immersed program of Alvernia University
on July 1, 2009.
"The GRCA is thrilled to house the Leadership Berks program
as well as strengthen its partnership with Alvernia University," said
Randy Peers, GRCA President & CEO. "The Leadership Berks
program is one of the most important tools we have in our county to
develop and retain top talent, as well as strengthen our community
of leaders. We are pleased to bring a talented leader like Toni Eckert
onto the GRCA staff, and we thank Alvernia University for their
work to strengthen and develop this outstanding program."
The program educates and engages community leaders in both
the for profit and nonprofit sectors, and it also builds organizational
development capacity of area nonprofits by providing nonprofit
management and board training to nonprofit managers and current
or future board leaders. Through a curriculum of 400+ hours of
class instruction, service learning projects, and a placement on a
nonprofit or community board or committee in Berks County, the
program provides opportunities to build leadership skills, expands
community leadership networks, and provides orientation to
community assets and challenges.
To date, the program has graduated over 900 community leaders
who serve Greater Reading and beyond, and it engages over 75
business and community leaders, lawmakers, and field experts as
volunteer faculty.
This new arrangement for the Leadership Berks program
includes new and strengthened benefits to enhance the program's
impact. Commencing with the Leadership Berks class of 2019,
Alvernia will provide three complementary internship credits in
