opportunities and reaching out to companies. Students earn credits
and their grades are determined by input from their mentor as well
as their own reflections of their experiences, some submitted by
video.
"We're lucky to be in Berks County, working together with
organizations like BBEC and BCIU's Career Ready Berks that help
make connections for students," Pleis said.
The more exposure students have, the more opportunities they
have to grow. Students, and their parents, can make knowledgeable
decisions when they see all the options. This is especially important
since college isn't for everyone, and it's not the only path leading
to a fruitful career. Pleis said during ninth grade industry visits
each fall, students are introduced to different industries (medical,
manufacturing, etc.). After a half day, they can see different roles
within a company that may appeal to them, such as the technical
aspects of manufacturing, or the business-oriented focus of jobs like
finance and human resources.
"Our goal is to get students interested in a field and direct them
to both technical and professional careers," said Dr. Richard H.
Faidley, Superintendent, Wilson School District.

ISTEM makes a splash with ninth grade
'Shark Tank'
In ninth grade, Wilson High School introduces its ISTEM
(Integrated STEM) to teach Science, Technology, Engineering
and Math and has an integrated lab class to apply the concepts

they've learned. Both geometry and algebra tracks are offered,
accommodating students of all academic levels.
"It is attainable for every student who has the drive to do the
classwork," said Joe Melograna, Honors ISTEM Physics teacher,
Wilson High School.
ISTEM students are required to do a group research project in
engineering design and plan a functional prototype that they'll build
throughout the school year. Each group is assigned a vetted local
professional who acts as a project advisor would in a "real-world"
work environment. The groups then present their prototype and
design process to a "Shark Tank" of ISTEM teachers and mentors/
professionals for their final grade.
For example, one group created a new way to dispense toothpaste,
making the container reusable to reduce waste in landfills.
"I believe (the students' concept) could easily be applied to the
real world today (with proper time and money)- especially since
preserving the environment is a big concern," said mentor Westley
Scull Jr., electrical designer 1, Worley.
"Each group is required to do some coding and 3D drawing and
manufacture a 'product' that solves a specific problem. This gives
them hands-on experience and exposes them to all of the equipment
in the lab," said Melograna.
With a state-of-the-art lab, students use advanced equipment
including a CNC router, injection molder, drill press, table saws,
laser engraver and 3-D printers. The lab features a glass conference
room with interactive TV, which is used to teleconference with
mentors.
