Hamburg's Native Wildlife Habitat Committee has planted several gardens in public areas including the Etchberger
Community Park and the Kernsville Dam Recreational Area.
Their goal is to introduce a new garden every year or to replace
an existing non-native habitat with native species. The gardens
have been attracting butterflies, bees and other pollinators.
Building on the concept of community gardening, several
members of Hamburg's Safe, Clean, and Green Team designed
and built a community garden on a vacant lot located within
Hamburg's designated Elm Street Neighborhood. All the
materials were donated from local businesses and the labor to
prepare the lot and build the boxes was all voluntary, so the cost
to the Safe, Clean and Green Committee was minimal. After
a few years of planning and building, ten raised garden boxes
were available to rent for the 2019 growing season at a cost of
$30 each. The community garden is for organic planting only
which reduces the amount of harmful chemicals introduced to
the environment.
The garden lays where there once was the Ol' Smith Model
Dairy that came about in 1914. Smith's Dairy was known for
their ice cream that was delivered to different towns that were
located near Hamburg. Members of the community garden
wanted to keep the tradition of Historic Hamburg in play by
reinventing the vacant lot.

Wildlife Habitat Committee are both administered through the
Our Town Foundation, Hamburg's Non-profit Community
