It's not easy being GREEN
Member businesses take us through
some of the ups and downs in the
latest phase of reopening
(Alvernia University, Berks Arts Council,
Berks Nature, Census Bureau, Council on
Chemical Abuse, Goggleworks, National
Recreation and Park Association, Northeast
Springboard Coalition, Olivet Boys and Girls
Club, Reading Public Library, and Teachers
in the Parks), we have distributed playground
activity and literacy packets to keep kids
engaged throughout the summer.

READING RECREATION
COMMISSION
Navigating a
new normal
The award-winning Reading Recreation
Commission is committed to serving community residents, and continues to "stand
in the gap" of need during the COVID-19
pandemic. Along with many partners in the
city and county, we play a key role in ensuring
healthy, happy and connected communities
through recreation programming, youth meal
service and family food distribution. Since
March 2020, we have prepared and distributed
more 80,000 meals and snacks to youth
in Reading and have distributed hundreds
of pantry boxes weekly-courtesy of our
friends at Helping Harvest. Our recreation
services bring people together and make our
community stronger.
Though recreation programming looks
different this summer amid the pandemic
backdrop, we have worked to ensure that
kids and adults have safe opportunities to
socialize and engage in positive physical
activity through initiatives like our popular
Wacky Water Wednesdays, summer tennis
program, DEK hockey, and summer playground aka Camp COVID. Additionally,
in partnership with community partners

The safety of our residents and staff remains
our top priority. Since March, we have implemented additional, rigorous health and safety
protocols. To that end, we perform daily
deep cleanings of buildings and facilities,
sanitize work areas regularly, use UV lights
to disinfect surfaces and equipment, provide
hand sanitizer and masks, limit operating
hours, promote social distancing, and adhere
to local, state, and federal health regulations.
We know that "normal" may never be quite
the same. Still, we remain confident that
we'll continue to provide quality recreation
programs and facilities to the residents of
Reading-perhaps with a few more restrictions than usual. We plan to offer a modified
afterschool program this upcoming school
year with limited hours and participation
levels to ensure a healthy and happy time
for everyone. For more information about
the Reading Recreation Commission, follow
us on Facebook or visit our website at www.

RIDGEWOOD WINERY
NO "wining" allowed,
only adapting
Ridgewood Winery opened its second location at 215 Township Line Road, Bechtelsville,
on March 5. After two weeks in operation
with much fanfare, COVID-19 happened.
We decided to close our Bechtelsville location
to run all operations at our Birdsboro location. We believed this would be a two-week
recharge, but in those two weeks the world
changed. As a business, we had to figure out
how to get our products to the customers. If
we weren't willing to change as a business, we
would have been left behind. We personally
changed the way we were shopping and were
vigilant about supporting the local businesses
whenever possible. For businesses like ours,
the rules changed quickly, and we had to
adapt to them in an instant and move on.
After moving into the green phase, we were
managing our Birdsboro location well, so we
decided to reopen our Bechtelsville location.
But then the rules changed significantly for
breweries and wineries. We were now required
to serve food with our wine to customers.
After contacting some of our caterers, we
figured out the best way to work together and
serve a meal, so people can enjoy our wines
on our property. This was not something
