The idea for "Rebuild Berks" grew out
of seeing what surrounding counties were
doing with their CARES Act funding to
bolster their local economies. In Lancaster
County, a small portion of the funds was
utilized to launch a marketing campaign
called "Recovery Lancaster." The County
Commissioners agreed that investing a
small amount of Berks' CARES Act funding
toward this county-wide initiative was an
effective way to give all the county's local
businesses a boost.
"It's important for us all to look
to local options first when we
are shopping or making decisions within our own business,"
Commissioner Michael S. Rivera
said. "If we all do our part and
continue to make small sacrifices,
we will be able to accomplish much
more as a greater community."
The campaign has four main components:
Shop Local, Connect Local, Free Training
and Grants.
The Shop Local portion highlights the
businesses in the community and encourages
consumers to focus on supporting those
shops and stores as much as possible. The
Rebuild Berks website has several resources,
available in English and Spanish, to help
consumers discover the hidden gems in
their own neighborhoods, from a list of
local farm markets to a winery tour.
The ads for the Rebuild Berks initiative
also feature photos of several local businesses,
including Sweet Ride Ice Cream, Super
Natural Produce, Folino Winery and Estate,
Pagoda Apparel, Weaver's Orchard, The
Plugg, R.M. Palmer Company and others.
Consumers can also nominate other local
businesses to be featured in the campaign
through the website.
The Connect Local section is primarily
for companies who have experienced supply
chain disruption due to the pandemic. The
Rebuild Berks website has a "matching
form" that allows a business to put in their
information and the materials they are
looking to source to connect to a local
supplier. The tool is the most effective for
companies in need of raw materials and
components for a manufacturing process.
Through Rebuild Berks, local business
owners and employees are also able to
attend free training workshops through

GRCA. About 600 people have already taken
advantage of the various trainings offered since
the beginning of June. More trainings are
available throughout August and September.
Finally, the Rebuild Berks campaign will
soon be offering grants for local business
owners. The grants will be funded through
some of the CARES Act funding the county
received from the federal government. More
information will be released about those grants
once the funding is distributed.
"We each have a role to play in ensuring

Berks County stays open as we continue to
face the challenges of this global pandemic,"
Commissioners' Chair Christian Y. Leinbach
said. "We can vote for Berks by how we spend
our money. By focusing on local businesses, we
can keep more money local and help businesses, especially small businesses, recover more
rapidly. The Berks County Commissioners are
proud to partner with the Greater Reading
Chamber Alliance to support and strengthen
our local business owners and support our
local employees. Together we can bring our
local economy back."
