Berks County businesses recognize
value of triple bottom line

hy is sustainability important? Does Berks County even
care about sustainability? Why should I care about
sustainability?

All of these are good questions. And I think you will find
the answers as compelling as the questions. I will tell you that
sustainability matters, and Berks County has outstanding examples
in its business and municipal communities. It is time for us to shine
a light on this topic and understand its importance to Berks County.
In the past few years, sustainability has been surfacing in several
articles and reports.

In 2016, Berks Nature published a report as part of its State
of the Environment strategy. It was simply titled "Sustainability."
Authored by Scot Case, this well-done report contains stories from
Berks County business leaders and well-known Berks County
companies like Redner's, Penske, East Penn, The Reading Hospital,
Boscov's and Ethosource.
In the report, Case educates us on the triple bottom line of
sustainability - People, Planet, Profits. It offers excellent
examples of how sustainability creates business value
for Berks businesses - lower operating costs,
increased sales, improved employee engagement,
reduced risks.
In late 2018, Walt Fullam, the former
Director of Continuing Education at Penn
State Berks, now retired, wrote in an article
titled "Green is the New Black," that for
the past 10 years, Penn State Berks
has been engaged in applied
research projects in and around
sustainable energy technology.
This includes research in the
following areas - electric
vehicles, energy generation,
energy storage, and energy
conservation. With an eye on
sustainability, we need to meet
the needs of the present without
diminishing the ability to meet
the needs of future generations.

Recognizing the importance of sustainability crosses all business
sectors - especially manufacturing. At the end of July, East
Penn Manufacturing launched social media posts touting their
commitment to be a green leader in their industry. An excerpt
from their Facebook post states, "The centerpiece of East Penn's
commitment to the environment can be found in the company's
continuous product lifecycle approach. Our lead battery production
process is an example of circular economy in action. Over the
course of the next few days we are going to feature posts about
Sustainability and how important it is to our company and the
customers we serve."
At the municipal level, sustainability is again top of mind. You also
may not know that the City of Reading has a Sustainability Manager
as part of their team. In the summer of 2019, City Council passed
a resolution establishing a goal of powering the entire community
with 100 percent clean, renewable energy by 2050. Reading is the
19th community in Pennsylvania to commit to 100 percent clean,
renewable energy. It is also the 130th city to adopt this
goal nationally.

This concept is reflected in the Berks Nature report.

With this resolution, the City of Reading is
committed to transitioning "municipal-owned
facilities and equipment to clean, renewable
electricity by 2030 and 100 percent clean,
renewable energy for heat and transportation
by 2040" and a community-wide transition
of the electricity supply by 2035 and
"in all energy-use sectors including
transportation by 2050."
