rom restaurants to hotels to manufacturers to construction
companies, it seems as though every business is hiring these
days. Fresh off the rebound from a locked down, pandemic
world, businesses are finding themselves with overworked staffs and
understaffed businesses.
Sign-on bonuses, competitive wages and more paid time off are
becoming the norm. Those in the market for a new job have their
pick. Now the balance of power is tilting to those who are employable
rather than those who are doing the employing.
This shift serves as the inspiration for this edition. It begs the
questions: How do businesses attract and retain a talented workforce
when everyone is offering extras? How do they set themselves apart
from other companies? I asked six member companies how they are
staying competitive in this flooded job market, and they all had one
thing in common: treating employees as their most important asset.
Reading their submissions made me think about the laws of
attraction. One such law is that of magnetism. It says that everything
in our lives - the people, things, circumstances - is the direct result
of the vibes we give off. Basically, we attract what we are. Treating
employees poorly will only attract more poor employees; however,
it is clear these companies are building a positive business culture to
attract employees who share their values. Hiring the wrong people
costs too much time and money, but hiring the right people helps
set up a business for long-term success.
It is no different at GRCA. Our leadership has been finding ways
to make sure staff feel valued and appreciated. By offering flexible
work hours and a hybrid office and work-from-home schedule, we
can better maintain the much sought-after work/life balance. We are
building a culture of teamwork and open communication.
Today, we are building that culture with a company happy hour.
Coming together once a month to share a few snacks and a glass of
wine or beer, is helping us get to know each other as people and not
just coworkers. It's little things like this that can help build the best
team and keep that team together for the long run.
