workforce development continued "We are excited to be part of the Alliance, and the timing for this work could not be better. Both career and technical centers in Berks County have a record of preparing youth to enter skilled careers in the region. But the importance and relevance of career and technical education is becoming more evident and recognized. All educators are being challenged to think outside the current school structure to best prepare learners for the skills and knowledge expected in today's ever-changing workplace. The key is how we deliver relevant instruction and whom we involve in providing 'real world' experiences that prepare students to make informed decisions regarding their post-secondary plans. High school internships are growing rapidly as are opportunities for teachers to visit and get to know the expectations of local businesses. These are just two of the many initiatives underway that are enhanced by a countywide collaborative career pathways system." James Kraft, Director of the Berks Career and Technology Center "Having students as early as possible exposed to and engaged with higher education programs including enrolling in college-level courses helps them understand the opportunities available to continue their education beyond high school. It also helps them appreciate college faculty's expectations while also demonstrating how this level of education prepares them to move into their chosen career. Programs that allow qualified high school students to earn college credit also provide a practical and affordable head start on acquiring a post-secondary credential. K-12 and higher education working together means we are able to maximize the impact of the 'college AND career ready' message that is critical for young people and their families to understand."
