Sarai Variety
Flower Shop

ourdes Peralto, a resident of Reading, had always dreamed of
owning a flower and variety store in Reading, Pa. Her dream
came true when she started Sarai Variety Flower Shop about
four years ago on North 9th Street, where she would lease until she
would someday own her own building. This was a big step for her:
she relocated to Reading from New York City where she worked in
the flower shop industry for almost 30 years. She saw a better opportunity for her family to grow a new business in Berks County.

Lourdes, a mother and wife, knew that owning a business would
be a tough road. "God always provides," said Lourdes when asked
about some of the challenges she faced as an entrepreneur. "Don't
be afraid to become an entrepreneur and try new things. Just make
sure that when you do it, you do it with love, discipline, and focus.
Just keep everything positive and always focus on satisfying your
customer."
About six months ago, she took her business to a new level when
she purchased her own building across the street at 10 North 9th
Street. It's an impressive accomplishment and one she cherishes.
Lourdes is especially excited because she also resides in one of the
apartments above the business, which allows her to focus on her dual
role as a business owner and a mother.
So where did the name Sarai Variety Flower Shop originate?
Perhaps you haven't met Lourdes' little helper yet: her six-year-old
daughter's name is Sarai, which is the inspiration for the business's
name. "Sarai tells customers that this is her business and that she
owns it," says Lourdes, with a laugh. Sarai is always reminding her
friends and family as well!
