Building a Better
Boyertown: New Year,
New Momentum
Emily Jones - Asst. Main Street Manager

uilding a Better Boyertown
(BBB) rang in 2018 with
a couple of very exciting announcements. At the
end of December, Building
A Better Boyertown and The
Colebrookdale Railroad were
awarded $1 million in grants from
the BB&T Economic Growth
Fund, with a generous offer of
$500,000 in matching grants to
come. This enormous opportunity
was the result of the ambitious
Town Vision and Action plan that BBB has been
working on the past 10 months, and we are so
excited to get to work on implementing the
plan. With this funding BBB now has support
of a tourism marketing director and a future
ambassador working to tell Boyertown's unique
story. The transformation of the BBB office into
a tourism center (to be open on weekends) and
the position of a tourism ambassador is coming soon. Boyertown
has a unique story to tell, and this support will bring Boyertown one
step closer to becoming a Destination Town.

Then, in the beginning of January, Governor Tom Wolf announced
the approval of funding through the Keystone Communities program
to support the acquisition and rehabilitation of an anchor building
in Boyertown. Administered by the Department of Community
and Economic Development (DCED), the Keystone Communities
program is designed to encourage the creation of partnerships between
the public and private sectors in the community, supporting local
initiatives that grow and stabilize neighborhoods and communities;
ensure social and economic diversity; and enhance the overall quality
of life for residents. This building was identified through the Town
Vision process as being the anchor site needed to help fill the demand
for dining in a three-mile radius of the downtown that came out of
the market study.

This $300,000 grant is meant
to entice an investor to purchase
45 South Reading Avenue and
revitalize the building into a
sustainable restaurant. While
this is an exciting opportunity,
it's also a gift that keeps giving.
When BBB loans this grant to
an investor, it will be paid back
to Building a Better Boyertown
and put into a fund for the next
economic transformational strategy for Boyertown as outlined
in the Town Vision. This grant is an exciting
opportunity to transform an underutilized building along our Main Street into a sustainable
business, bringing more foot traffic to support
existing businesses and a growing downtown
with a unique story to tell.
Building a Better Boyertown has been working
for the past 16 years to keep Boyertown a town we are all proud of
with thriving businesses, vibrant promotional activities and securing
economic incentives to our community. It's with no small amount of
pride that we make these announcements, but we need the help of
the community to keep this momentum going! Without volunteers
(like you!) who are working together on these projects, Boyertown
would not be the special place that it is. Last year, there were over
20,840 volunteer hours dedicated to these projects, equaling a dollar
value of $497,883 of investment into the revitalization efforts. If you
are interested in getting involved with BBB as a volunteer or to join
our staff, please contact our office. We would love to have you join
us as there are still many initiatives we cannot accomplish without
you. Please visit for contact information, or
drop by the BBB table at our upcoming Coming Out of Hibernation
event on April 21, 2018.
Building A Better Boyertown is embracing Boyertown's rich
heritage, and with a lot of planning and hard work, bringing our
town into the future. We hope that you are as excited as we are!
