graduation from Clarkson University, Ben worked for five years

a large manufacturing environment gave the company a new and
different perspective as it moves forward into the 21st century.

Brown Engineering
Company
Good business runs in the family

Ellis Eugene Brown founded the Brown Engineering Company
in 1905 in Reading, Pennsylvania. Mr. Brown was a Worcester
Tech engineer and designed several proprietary products that the
company manufactured for many years. These products include
the Mule Pull line-shaft clutches, quick-change vises, the high
capacity Kushion-Torque flexible shaft couplings, and the Brown
Sectional Storage Rack, which is still being manufactured today.
The ownership of the company was passed on to Ellis's son,
Eugene, in 1970. Gene continued to develop the company's own
products but also put more emphasis on developing the industrial
supply part of the business. Some of the well-known lines represented then, and to this day, are Parker Hannifin Corp., Diamond
Chain, Gates Rubber Co. and Total Industrial Lubricants. Much
of the company's success can be attributed to the long-standing relationships with these and many of its other vendors.

Over the last 15 years, things have continued to change
and evolve at Brown Engineering. Gene's younger daughter, Jillian Brown, came to work for the company. Benjamin
was named vice president in 2010 and is heavily involved
in outside sales, working with customers and addressing
their needs on site. He has been successful in developing the
industrial lubrication and metalworking fluid business.
Our longevity can be attributed to the relationships we have
built with our trading partners, both customers and vendors.
Honesty, integrity, dependability, good service, inventory
levels, competitive pricing and technical support are some of
the factors that have allowed us to develop those relationships.
And of course, as in any business, our employees are the most
important reason for our longevity and success. Together we
are working to continue the idea that Brown is the place where
" Tradition Meets Technology to Keep Your Gears Turning. "
We appreciate the opportunity to participate in GRCA's
Commerce Quarterly magazine. The Chamber has always
been a resource for companies to share their experiences and learn from others in the business community.

Boscov's

In 1970, Eugene H. Brown joined the firm, and in 1975, a
partnership was formed in order that continuity in the ownership and ongoing development of the business could be
maintained. In 1978, the company incorporated under the
name Brown Engineering Co., Division of Browneering Co.,
Inc. Over the years, Gene did just about every job there was
to do at Brown including making deliveries, machining parts
in the shop, drafting drawings, and working with customers
on site. In 1998, he became the third-generation president of
the company. By this time, the company was focusing predominantly on growing the wholesale distribution business.

A store that has it all

Seven years later, in 2005, two significant events occurred. We
celebrated our first Centennial and a fourth-generation family
member, Benjamin F. Brown, joined the company. Following his

While Boscov's is America's largest family-owned department store today, it all started back in 1914 when at only 18,
Solomon Boscov left his family in Russia and immigrated to
the United States. He settled in Reading, PA where the Yiddish

The longevity of Boscov's
is best attributed to an
unwavering focus on our core
principles. Over our 100+ year
existence, these principles
have successfully guided us
through challenging times
and their value has once again proven timeless as we
successfully navigate the current pandemic.
