Business & Community
Advocacy

Add Advocacy A
to to-do list
By Katie Hetherington Cunfer,
Director of Government and
Community Relations

t the time of this writing, the world of politics is in a very
rocky state. It is my fondest hope that by the time you read
this, collective jets will have cooled. With the current states
of unrest, it can be daunting to think about entering the arena, but
it is more important than ever to make sure to advocate for business-friendly policies. Businesses great and small are the backbone of
American society. They provide the high-paying, family-sustaining
jobs that power our way of life. They provide the opportunity to
create and innovate, to dream and do. It's called the American Dream
for a reason, and the business community, coupled with our form
of representative democracy that spreads out the power among the
people, is what makes that possible and the envy of the world.

The most effective tool in the world of advocacy is your voice.
Your story, your knowledge and your perspective hold so much
more weight in the eyes of an elected official than any high-paid
lobbyist anywhere. When you speak, they listen. The number one

to jump to the Billy Blanks full-body workout level on the first day.
You'll pull something and get discouraged. That's where the advocacy
programming at the Greater Reading Chamber Alliance (GRCA)
can help. GRCA serves as a friendly liaison to elected officials and
to the world of politics and policy. We aggregate the information
you need and keep you informed on the important legislative and
policy changes. You can rely on GRCA to answer a question, find
a policy, make a connection and do the research so you can keep
focused on your already busy schedule. We will also be connecting
legislators directly with Berks County businesses through virtual
meetings, on-site business tours, legislator office visits and other
opportunities throughout 2021.
GRCA offers a call-to-action center that you can use to contact
your elected official on a range of issues. In 2020, GRCA members
sent several hundred emails and letters to elected officials at all levels
to promote reopening the Berks economy, passing limited liability
protection, advocating for the restaurant and hospitality sector, and
other important topics. The request to include changes to the Paycheck
Protection Program (PPP) and ensure businesses would not incur
extra taxes due to using that funding was heard overwhelmingly by
our federal legislators and was included in the COVID-relief and
