Downtown Hamburg sees
business growth during pandemic
By Deena Kershner, Executive Director, Our Town Foundation

T

he year 2020 has probably been the most challenging time
to own a business in recent history; however, the majority
of businesses in Downtown Hamburg managed to prosper
through the troubling times. Three businesses permanently closed
their doors but as they closed, they were quickly replaced by new
entrepreneurs desiring to add to the array of services and unique
shops that are already in town. In the year-end months, five new
businesses opened, three of which
filled storefronts that had been vacant
for many years dating as far back
as 2007.

Cindy Harvath, a Hamburg resident, opened Cindy's Flowering
Cupboard. She offers the freshest
floral arrangements in town and
provides custom orders for weddings, birthdays, proms and more.
In addition to selling flowers there
are several gift items available such
as homemade jams and jellies, mustards, dip mixes, boxed chocolates,
handmade candles and natural goat
milk soaps. Harvath also can create
made-to-order custom gift baskets
and offers delivery within a 10-mile radius.
The New Life Thrift Store opened its second location in town. Their
first location is in Pottsville. They are a non-profit establishment that
supports other local non-profits by donating their proceeds to them.
Their first recipient was the Northern Berks Food Pantry. The store
sells clean, slightly used women's clothing and accessories including
shoes, handbags, jewelry, scarves, hats and more.
Diamond Décor recently opened, selling upscale home décor and
gift items. The grand opening coincided with a " Wine, Chocolate,
and Cheese " event held in the downtown. The owners, Joe and
Cindy Zeidler, were delighted with the amount of people who
walked through the doors opening day.
" We offered a raffle of a gift card and there were so many people
in our store that we ran out of sign-up forms, " Joe said.

Ribbon Cutting events were held at two new barbershops that
opened in the borough. Gifted Hands Barbershop opened the
beginning of November, filling a North 3rd Street storefront that
had been vacant for more than six years. Owner Hommy Colon was
inspired to open a barbershop in Hamburg because, as a first time
homeowner in the borough, he noticed the community had a need
for an urban barbershop.
A second barbershop called What
Matters Co. opened its doors on
South 4th Street, filling a storefront
that had been vacant for many years.
Ely's Shoe Store closed at that location in 2007 and has been empty
ever since.
" Having a business finally open its
doors at this central location in town
is an indication that Downtown
Hamburg is being sought out
by entrepreneurs, " said Deena
Kershner, Executive Director of Our
Town Foundation, the Borough's
Community Revitalization organization. " Several business owners have
mentioned that their customers are
telling them that Hamburg is now the place to shop. "
What Matters Co. features vintage furniture, barber chairs, a chess
table and art by Kempton artist Jonathan Bond and others. Matthew
Baker, the owner, believes in supporting other local businesses so he
serves locally roasted coffee and uses local hair and lifestyle products.
He plans to host local musicians in the future.
The trend of new businesses opening in Hamburg will continue
into 2021, as Copperz, a new brew pub, is expected to open in the
beginning of the year.
Plan to visit downtown Hamburg soon to see all it has to offer.
