" Bringing the
Indoor Outdoor "
Reimagining Streets as Places
By Sandy Green, Kutztown Community Partnership

2) Engage Kutztown University and Kutztown School District
students to participate in mural painting

3) Engage local artists, organic farmers and wineries

4) Outdoor farm-to-table dinners

This is the first phase of our plan for a walkable community/streets
as places project with a focus on the nuts and bolts of people-first
streets. Great things are happening in Kutztown. Stay Tuned!
" Everyone should have access to spaces and places that make it safe
and easy for us to walk... Walkable communities are good for social
connectedness, good for business, good for the environment, and, most
importantly, good for our personal health. " - U.S. Surgeon General
Vivek H. Murthy

T

his year, Kutztown Community Partnership (KCP) along
with the borough of Kutztown will focus on Kutztown as
a walkable community and reimagining " streets as places, "
to envision gathering places in downtown Kutztown. When your
main street is designed with people as the focus, rather than cars and
trucks, more people will stay, shop, connect and contribute to the
community's economic vitality.

KCP took the first step back in 2019 when it suggested turning
one of the alleys into a pedestrian-only, pocket park, a gathering space
for people to connect with friends and family. Borough leadership
and council members were very supportive of this project and agreed
to pave the alley and provide free wi-fi and installation. Through an
AARP grant and private donations, KCP was able to complete the
pocket park with benches, a bike rack and lighting.
This year KCP will engage stakeholders, community leaders and
community residents in creating safe, quality places that enhance
the overall human experience. Creating streets for people starts with
creating a safe, sustainable and healthy place for residents and visitors
to connect, engage and support the local economy.
The plan is to look for early wins to generate excitement, visibility
and buy-in. Early wins include:

1) Empower individuals and groups to connect
to Kutztown through walking (themed walks, web
site to log steps with incentives, scavenger hunt, etc.)
