enhanced programs and services to better
serve the business community and fuel
our local economy. In order to get there,
we need to fully understand where "gaps"
exist and where there is a need. But the goal
is to make GRCEDC the "one-stop" shop
for supporting businesses small and large.
Greater Reading is incredibly diverse.
From our business size makeup and
industry scope, to the physical diversity
of our population and the unique cultures
that come along with that, we have the
opportunity right now to blend so many
varying aspects of our community. What
most excites you about this?
Well, history has proven that diversity
is always a strength, whether it is diversity
of ideas, cultures, industries, skills-sets or
you name it. And, Berks County is very
unique in this respect. We have so many
great assets here - but most important are
the industrious people who live and work
in the county. At the end of the day, what
excites me the most is working with and
for those people.
We know you have been spending much
of your time so far traveling all parts of
the county, meeting with many different
stakeholders, from business and community leaders to elected officials and everyone
in between. Have any common themes
emerged that will help you shape the vision
for the GRCEDC moving forward?
There have been four - three specific
and one theme that is over-arching. The
first is that "Reading Matters" - the firm
belief that we need to turn things around
in the city in order to secure prosperity for
the county long term.
The second is businesses' concern over
finding their future labor force - this is the
workforce development challenge.
The third is that the Chamber needs to
have more of a focus on small business development and support for new entrepreneurs.
I would add to this that we need to look
at business expansion opportunities and
not just focus on new business attraction.
Related to this, we need to engage our
growing Latino business community and
support their growth and development.
And finally, the over-arching theme
is changing the negative perceptions of
Reading and starting to build a positive
narrative. And there is a lot to be positive
about - but we ourselves need to believe
this first!

If you were going to teach a college course,
what would you teach?
Critical Thinking Skills! Unfortunately, it
isn't taught in college or grad school, but it
should be because it's the most important skill
for anyone to develop. Your ability to analyze
and question your decisions on a regular basis
is like a continuous improvement process to
one's humanity.
If we can get just a bit personal, can you
tell us a little about yourself?
I am married to Deb Roman and we have

an 11-year-old daughter, Leslieann. Most of
Deb's family lives in the Macungie area in
Lehigh County, and it's great to be this close
to all of them. Coming from Brooklyn, we
love all kinds of food, so we're really looking
forward to trying out some new places in
Berks. I grew up in a largely Italian household,
so you know I love Italian food. And, Deb
is from Puerto Rico, so Spanish food runs a
close second. We've heard there's no shortage
of restaurants serving up both types of cuisine,
and we can't wait to check them out!
