UNDERSTANDING
the Cloud

T
he term Cloud has a good bit of glamour to it these days
made popular by pundits, computer geeks and Hollywood
TV shows alike. With all the hype, one basic question I still
get is, "What is the cloud and how will it help my business?"
At its simplest, the term Cloud is little more than a marketing
buzzword. If you remember the internet, the World Wide Web, and
the information superhighway, then at its core you're already familiar
with the Cloud.
The term Cloud today embraces a philosophy of centralizing
information technology to build greater scale and delivery over
diverse geographic distances using the internet. If you are using
today's cloud, then what you are doing is renting computer power
from someone else. The host from whom you are renting cloud
services is taking responsibility for the logistics. This means a cloud
host handles purchasing equipment, building a stable environment,
redundant power, internet and ongoing management to maintain it
all while also planning for things like growth, capacity, load balancing
and disaster recovery.
If you've been around technology (or business) long enough,
you may remember this concept as a mainframe system. The cloud
concept today is different from all the predecessors by the complexity
of the applications, the volume of data that can be cloud hosted, and
the speed at which it can easily be transmitted to remote locations.
This leap is made possible by the blazing fast internet connecting
much of our country.

What it means to be a cloud host is that the company is putting
together complicated networks including firewalls, switches,
servers, and storage solutions and then renting out that capacity.
Companies like mine are known as Managed Service Providers, or
Managed Cloud Providers, and we bundle our expertise in managing
technology with a cloud offering that enables businesses to eliminate
or reduce internal IT staff by shifting the purchase from a capital
expense the business might self-manage to an operating expense. By
making it an operating expense, Cloud Service Providers are changing
the landscape of technology to enable businesses to focus on their
core offering, purchasing a desired computing experience, instead of
purchasing a pile of computer parts and hiring a guy internally to
make it all work.
Many businesses place only one aspect of their software in the
cloud. This is possible because the companies who formerly wrote
and sold software have shifted from selling their software licenses as a
version, to selling their software as a hosted application. Application
cloud providers bundle in proprietary software code which runs
the application in which the data lives. An example of this includes
companies like Salesforce, Quickbooks Cloud, and Dropbox. When
you subscribe to their service, they allow you to use the software and
they maintain your data.
One of the first truly "cloud based" applications was email.
Microsoft offers Office 365 which bundles software with a Microsoft
Hosted Email account and OneDrive account. Companies are using
