President's Message

W

e are coming off of a fun and relaxing summer, and Lancaster City &
County Medical Society had its annual re-organization meeting in August
to help steer us in the direction we believe our membership is interested.
We look forward to another rewarding year.

Now, the leaves have started to change color, and long-sleeve shirts are becoming the
norm. The kids are back in school, and routines have settled in. As this issue goes to print,
we are preparing for the House of Delegates meeting in Hershey from October 25th-27th.
A number of topics are on the agenda:
* Scope of practice continues to be a sensitive matter and warrants our monitoring;

* Medical and recreational marijuana are also evolving issues;
* E-prescribing controlled substances is a new requirement that will hopefully ease the
administrative burden in our offices;
* Maintenance of Certification is still being addressed;
* And the patient test results law (Act 112) is requiring earlier notification of patient
results by the performing facility.
A recent conference was held September 13th-14th at Penn State Dickinson Law in
Carlisle addressing physicians' legal matters, and this issue of Lancaster Physician presents
an article about enhancing patient engagement and preventing lapses that can lead to
lawsuits. Some other timely topics that we review in this issue include transitions of care,
intermittent fasting, and dealing with the challenges that stem from patients looking to
the Internet as a source of medical information and a means for self-diagnosis.
Lastly, we are happy to announce this year's three deserving Foundation scholarship
winners from a strong pool of applicants. They will be presented at our Holiday Social
on Saturday, December 7, 2019 at Lancaster Country Club. We hope you will mark your
calendars to join us then!
