President's Message

espite the chaos of the last six months, I look forward to beginning my term as
President of the Lancaster City & County Medical Society. First, I would like
to give a huge shout out to Bob Aichele, outgoing President, for navigating
a very difficult time during our history. The past six months especially have
been very uncertain for all of us, and we have had to cancel numerous events as a Society
out of concerns for member safety.
I am excited by our opportunity to contribute meaningfully to public health in Lancaster. We are all uncertain, anxious, exhausted, and pulled in different directions. As
physicians, however, we have a responsibility to our community in Lancaster to step up.
With everything politicized in both directions, many citizens are confused as to what to
believe regarding infection control, viral transmission, and other COVID concerns. Every
one of us as physicians has more medical knowledge and background than we know as well
as opportunities to educate. This can be in our children's schools, our houses of worship,
and within our social networks.

I am enthusiastic to help expand some of the programs in our Society that add value to
our membership. Our Women in Medicine group, under the guidance of Karen Rizzo,
the PAMED Women Physicians Section Chair, is the top in the state, planning, despite
COVID, opportunities for networking professionally and socially, for connecting with
our peers for support, and for education regarding topics of interest. Likewise, I would
like to see our Independent Physicians Group, which was able to get PPE and limited
supplies to members this spring, continue to provide support so that those of us out on
our own, aren't doing it all on our own. And while as physicians we focus on practicing
medicine, we often neglect the good we can do as a group when we advocate for ourselves,
our colleagues, and our patients. We will continue our legislative updates via ZOOM this
fall to get some COVID updates from our legislators. I will challenge every member these
next two years to reach out to your local representatives and offer yourself and the Society
as sources of information if needed.
I want to encourage everyone not to be overwhelmed and take one step at a time. If you
have a need or want to suggest a service we could offer, please reach out to us.
